Thank you, Dav Pilkey

2 05 2008

Knock, knock.
Who’s there?
I’m a pile up–

You get the picture.

A couple of months ago, Zack discovered the Captain Underpants series by Dav Pilkey.

Our lives have not been the same since.

What second (or third or fourth) grade boy wouldn’t like titles such as “Captain Underpants and the Perilous Plot of Professor Poopypants”, “Captain Underpants and the Attack of the Talking Toilets”, and “Captain Underpants and the Wrath of the Wicked Wedgie Woman”?

It’s the moms that don’t like them. (I think the dads actually do like them, but they can’t let the moms know that.)

So we sigh long-sufferingly through potty jokes and potty comics and remind our kids (because Zack introduced Eden to the same–drat older siblings sometimes!) that the only way they can continue to check out Captain Underpants books from the library is if they keep it in the books.

No talk of wedgies.

No potty words aloud.

But they still manage to slip the jokes into conversation.

Eden: What do you do when you get eaten by an elephant?
Stan (excitedly): Just run around ’til you’re all pooped out! That used to be my favorite joke! (catching himself, glancing anxiously at me) Uh, are you sure you kids should be reading those books?
